A scarce first-issue Sayer & Bennett edition of the earliest broadly accurate printed chart of the Seychelles, engraved in London from the pioneering French surveys of Jacques Raymond de Grenier de Taudias (le Vicomte Grenier) undertaken in 1771–72. The chart depicts the islands of Mahé and the Amirantes with their shoals, reefs and soundings in some detail, reflecting Grenier’s major contribution to the hydrography of the western Indian Ocean. This is the initial Sayer & Bennett state, preceding the later and more frequently encountered 1794 edition published under the imprint of Sayer's successors, Laurie & Whittle.
