One of the most famous historical guides to the city of Paris, fundamental source for the history of Paris, augmented for the first time with the scholarly additions of Dom Jacques du Breul (1528-1614), prior and archivist of the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, taken from the ancient charters in his care.
The illustrations includes the arms of the city of Paris on the title, 54 large figures of sculpted tombs engraved on wood by Jean Rabel, all full-page or almost, and an intaglio engraving by Brother Louis Petit depicting the vision of Saint John of Matha on the redemption of captives (p. 284).
This famous work originally derives from "La Fleur des antiquitez, singularitez et excellences de Paris", a slim volume composed and published by the bookseller Gilles Corrozet in 1532.
Many times reprinted, revised and expanded by its author, then by Nicolas and Pierre Bonfons, this historical guide was enriched with woodcut illustrations by Jean Rabel from 1588.
On the other hand, the copper engraving by the monk Louis Petit, dated 1606, appears for the first time in this edition.
