
SUFFRAGE TIE Woven silk thread tie, in the WSPU colours of purple, white and green, tassels of gilt wire hand-sewn at each end, faded and marked, 20mm. wide, c.1020mm. long including tassels, [c.1908] Footnotes: The WSPU was trailblazing in their use of merchandise in their adopted colours to disseminate the cause. Our tie is printed in purple (for dignity) and green (for hope) and white (for purity), colours which were introduced at the Hyde Park Rally of 21 June 1908. Merchandise was sold through the WSPU shops and advertised in Votes for Women. Christabel Pankhurst wears an identical tie, held together by a WSPU badge, in a photograph depicting her arrest with Flora Drummond and Emmeline Pankhurst at Clement's Inn on 13 October 1908 after the 'Rush' on the House of Commons.
