DESPARD (CHARLOTTE) AND MABEL COLLINS Outlawed. A Novel on the Woman Suffrage Question, FIRST EDITION, light spotting to half title and last page, publisher's pictorial limp boards depicting a suffragette in the dock, recased, covers soiled, spine slightly chipped, 8vo , Henry J. Drane Ltd., 1908 Footnotes: 'The description of prison life in this story us written by Mrs. Despard from her own experiences and observation [...] and is a revelation on a subject almost unknown to the public, namely, the treatment of women in prison' (Preface). Charlotte Despard (1844-1939), philanthropist and activist, was a key figure in the suffrage movement, a founding member of the Women's Freedom League in 1907, the Women's Peace Crusade and the Irish Women's Franchise League, as well as an active member of numerous socialist and suffrage organisations including the Tax Resistance League and the WSPU, of which she was joint secretary in 1906. In February 1907 she was arrested for taking part in the deputation from the Women's Parliament in Caxton Hall to the House of Commons and was sentenced to 21 days in Holloway. She drew on her experiences in prison for this novel, Outlawed, written with fellow Theosophist and popular occult novelist, Mabel Collins (1851-1927).
