American. 1986. Pressed steel. Fred Thompson was a long-time collector of Smith-Miller toys. In 1979, over 20 years after Smith-Miller ceased toy production, Thompson purchased the company and revived the brand by producing limited edition toys based on the original specifications. Thompson editions have a historical significance as high-end replicas of a brand, Smith-Miller, that established a "gold standard" for realism and craftsmanship of its toys. This is a "Mack B" toy, a detailed replica of a Mack B-series truck, one of the most iconic lines of heavy-duty trucks in American History. Thompson meticulously captured all of the B-series traits, a practice he carried forward from the Smith-Miller company. Thompson, recognizing the historical nature of the toy moulds which he now owned, did not destroy the moulds once a toy was created, but rather, he retained them for future limited production. This meant that once production of this cement truck reached 150 units, this exact model would be discontinued and never produced again with this specific configuration.
