Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 5. In this, one of the artist's most striking works, the subject is simple, the drawing bold and confident, clean-cut and strongly emotive. The treatment of the book shows amazing technical competence happily allied with the utmost spontaneity. The face of the reading man has all that expressiveness and psychological sincerity which is characteristic of Daumier's work; and for which, indeed, he had a special gift. Thick contour lines, broken here and there or syncopated, add to the plastic effectiveness of the picture. Noteworthy is the curious effect of the patch red ochre on the eye, repeated on the man's ear and cheek and on the top edge of the book he is reading.
