About the artist: Valentyn Sirenko was born in Lubny, Poltava Oblast. He is one of the prominent representatives of the Odessa underground painting and graphics, along with Yuriy Kovalenko (1931-2004), Valentyn Khrushch, Mykola Novikov, Anatoly Asaba and other artists of the Odessa informal school, which flourished in the late 1960s-1980s.

Most of these artists were patients of the Odessa Regional Psychiatric Hospital for many years, and Mykola Novikov and Anatoly Asaba died there. There is a museum at this hospital, the collection of which has been formed by doctors and art historians for over 50 years. Exhibitions of works by gifted patients are occasionally exhibited at various exhibition venues in Odessa and abroad.

Valentyn Sirenko, who graduated from the Kyiv State Art Institute (now NAOMA) in 1967 with a degree in architect-artist, has been creating paintings in completely different stylistic solutions throughout his creative life. His work is mainly influenced by post-impressionism and fauvism, but Sirenko always remains himself.

The artist really likes to paint female nature: on the beach and in the interior, naked and semi-naked, in dance and in a dream. His hedonism is boundless, his love of life is heard in its most natural manifestations: for example, admiring the sunset at sea. Sirenko defined his creative credo as follows: "I am a representative of the Ukrainian existential avant-garde" and explained that human consciousness goes beyond the boundaries of the physical shell, travels in outer space, returning enriched with new, bright, sometimes coded visions, and the artist's task is to transfer them to the canvas. Sirenko is convinced that it is not always necessary to add to a picture, to complete it, it should hide a secret and excite the viewer's imagination.
