Description
The Acrylic painting Canvas on Cardboard titled "A look that tells stories" is a striking exploration of human emotion, unspoken dialogue, and the layers of meaning that exist in the simple act of gazing into another's eyes. The composition is built upon the direct confrontation of two figures, their faces painted in bold, contrasting tones-one in shades of green and blue, the other in deep red and earthy brown. The opposition of color immediately sets the stage for tension, connection, and duality, as though these two presences embody not just individuals, but archetypes, worlds, or even inner states of the same soul. The green and blue figure radiates an almost ethereal calmness. Its softened expression and flowing lines suggest openness, an inclination toward listening and understanding. The cooler tones evoke serenity, wisdom, or the weight of introspection, as if this presence has long observed the world in silence. The face is elongated and gentle, with hints of light illuminating its features, symbolizing clarity of thought and inner peace. This figure stands as a metaphor for reason, for patience, and for the voice of experience, quietly but firmly asserting its presence without aggression. In contrast, the red and brown figure on the right burns with intensity. Its angular features and sharp lines exude passion, conflict, and a sense of urgency. The use of red, often associated with raw emotion, vitality, and even danger, imbues this figure with a visceral energy that contrasts sharply against the cooler calm of its counterpart. It seems to lean forward, pressing itself into the space of confrontation, demanding to be heard, its expression a blend of defiance, pain, and unrestrained honesty. This figure represents impulse, the heart's turbulence, and the unfiltered truth that often challenges reason. Between the two figures lies a swirling field of abstract strokes, blending muted greens, yellows, and blues. This liminal space is not empty but alive, vibrating with the tension of their encounter. It is here, in the space between looks, that the true story unfolds. The brushstrokes in this area appear restless, layered, and dynamic, symbolizing the unspoken words, memories, and histories that exist in silence. It is the shared ground of their dialogue-a place where emotions, past experiences, and hidden truths intermingle, creating a tapestry of meaning that is deeper than language.

About the artists: Alexander Gukalov
After graduating from Lviv Polytechnic, he was engaged in scientific work. In his free time, he studied the works of Plato, the poetry of the ancient East, and religious works. At this time, resistance to the routine of life and utilitarian science arose in him; he became interested in man and his secrets. Alexander decided to end his engineering career and become a humanitarian. Since 1990, he began to write and publish philosophical poems. Later he decided to devote himself to painting, a passion for which began during his years of study at the Lviv Polytechnic with caricatures and caricatures of classmates and teachers.
Since 2017 he has been painting with oil paints. Alexander does not have a formal art education, but he is convinced that the craft and talent of an artist do not directly depend on professional education. The artist's works are characterized by completeness of composition and depth of meaning. He is not afraid to work with different themes, his paintings are true modern art that touches people. The artist's portfolio includes landscapes and views of his favorite cities, portraits of pop stars, politicians, athletes, relatives, and animals. "I draw a toga when I feel the need for it. Therefore, I cannot say that I work in some narrow direction. Rather, it is a call from the soul," the artist says about himself.
