About the artist: The work of Fyodor Fyodorovich Fyodorovsky is one of the wonderful pages of Soviet theatrical and decorative art. In his face we are faced with a kind of talent
artist whose works occupy a special place in the history of Russian and Soviet art culture. It is hardly possible to find anyone among the Soviet theater artists who, with such consistency and strength as F.F. Fedorovsky, has revealed his unusually integral outlook, his natural painting gift.
Endowed with a huge inner temperament, deep musicality and a keen sense of color, F.F. Fedorovsky for almost fifty years worked on the opera works of the Russian composers-founders of the “mighty handful”. The artist managed to find such expressive artistic
funds that helped to convey to the listeners the richest content of the music of Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov. Borodin, singing the spiritual strength and power of the Russian people, his true love for his homeland. Therefore, the scenery of F. Fedorovsky created for the Bolshoi Theater represent a whole era in the development of a complex, synthetic image of a musical performance.
Unlike many contemporary artists, Fedorovsky did not know the painful searches in choosing the theme, genre or specifics of his profession. He immediately came to work in a theater, in a musical theater. The majestic tales and legends of the Russian people, epics and poetic fantasies forever, almost completely absorbed the creative imagination of Fedorovsky, who managed to embody the powerful epic images of ancient Russian cities and Russian nature in the scenery, in which the artist's worldview merges completely with the life of the heroes.
He had a rare ability for the artist ›, working several times on the same piece of music, to find new original solutions that enrich the visual image of the performance. Therefore, of particular interest in the study of Fedorovsky’s work is the consideration of various scenarios for his favorite operas Sadko, Prince Igor, Khovanshchiye, Boris Godunov, in which the artist was able to reveal himself most fully, and which, at the same time, represent the various stages of development of Russian theatrical and decorative art, penetrating deeper and deeper into the content of these immortal musical creations. Whatever periods of activity in the theater these works of F. Fedorovsky belonged to, always the basis of their figurative content was the nationality and truthfulness of the artist’s art, inspired by patriotic feelings and inexhaustible optimism.
Despite the fact that the work of F. Fedorovsky was formed in the 1900s - during one of the most difficult and controversial periods of Russian art, he managed to resist the onslaught of formalism, and perhaps only in the smallest share succumbed to this influence. He was saved not only firmly assimilated in
years of learning the traditions of Russian realistic art, but also a deep internal understanding of the very nature of the musical performance.
Born December 27, 1883 in Chernigov, Fedorovsky eight-year-old boy moved to Moscow. On the advice of a teacher at a public city school, his father sent him to the Stroganov Art School. The teacher was guided by the consideration that the boy had a beautiful, even handwriting,
and the parent - free training. Having received the title of scientific draftsman in 1905, Fedorovsky himself began to earn his living by teaching in preparatory classes. When in 1907 the artist graduated from the decorative department of the Stroganov Art School with a gold medal, he was left with him as a teacher “in the class of creative drawing.” And this was not accidental, since F. Fedorovsky was not only an excellent colorist, but also a wonderful a composer with spatial, compositional and plastic thinking. F. Fedorovsky continued his pedagogical work at the school after the revolution, until 1923, after its transformation into Vhutemas.
F. Fedorovsky found the Stroganov School in full bloom. A brilliant galaxy of Russian artists by the school teacher - S. Ivanov, A. Arkhipov, V. Serov, K. Korovin, M. Vrubel, architects I. Zholtovsky, F. Shekhtel, sculptor N. Andreev gave excellent preparation to the future artist, who forever kept the covenants of his beloved teachers. They not only brought up professional knowledge in him, but also developed his taste and general level of culture, and also involved him in the circle of social and artistic tasks that worried the leading artists of that time.
The most beloved teachers of F. Fedorovsky, who played a decisive role in the formation of him as an artist, were K. Korovin and M. Vrubel. Despite the fact that the young man was under the direct and strong influence of such original and vivid creative individuals, he managed to find himself, to go his own way in art, creatively developing what was valuable that these masters introduced into Russian art.
