Description
a very impressive antique porcelain entree serving dish, with lid and underplate. This piece dates to the late 1800s or early 1900s and is possibly Samson porcelain, or otherwise French. The piece features very intricately hand painted decoration depicting a galleon or ship of the line, rendered in exceptional detail complete with flying banners and a figurehead above heavy impasto waves. This ship appears on both sides of the dish as well as both sides of the lid and the center of the underplate. Surrounding the ship are intricate gilt and rust red floral scrollwork and delicate sprays of roses in light pink. The dish measures about 15 x 9 ½ x 10 7/8 inches, LxWxH (including the lid), or 6 1/2 inches tall at the rim. The underplate measures about 12 x 10 1/8 x 1 7/8 inches.
