Pair Cast Iron Horse Head Hitching Posts

Description

Early pair of cast iron hitching posts, each surmounted with a finely modeled horse head having an iron ring bit, above a twisted-barley shaft and decorative base with scrolling foliate detail. These posts would have originally been set at the edge of a walkway, carriage house, or stable entrance, serving both as functional tie points and ornamental architectural accents. Strongly sculptural and evocative of 19th century equestrian and stableyard design, with excellent outdoor decorative potential. 39 in H x 8 in W

Condition

One post mounted to a stone base; the other shows losses/alterations at the base and expected weathering, oxidation, and surface wear from outdoor use.
