Description: "The Race Around the World, Coqueret, publisher, lithographs. H. Jannin, Paris," late 19th century. Beautiful cardboard cover, illustrated with a transportation theme: balloon, spaceship, railway, horse, bicycle, tortoise. Game board, 45.5 x 72 cm, illustrated with a world map featuring vignettes (hot air balloon, steam locomotive, ship scenes, chariot pulled by a tortoise).
Board games, or strategy games adorned with scenery or set in a historical, geographical, literary, or imaginary world more or less adapted to their mechanics originated from lotteries and the Game of the Goose (Gioco dell'Oca), which appeared around 1575/80 in Florence in the circle of Francesco de' Medici.
Closed size 14 x 18 in , open 28x 18 , restored back with marbled paper .some oxidation of the paper and light stain .
