text in English
"Erotomania, or a Treatise Discoursing of the Essence, Causes, Symptomes, Prognosticks, and Cure of Love, or Erotique Melancholy" is a significant 17th-century medical text by Jacques Ferrand, translated into English by Edmund Chilmead and published in 1640 by L. Lichfield and sold by Edward Forrest.
This work explores the nature of "love sickness" or "erotic melancholy," a concept prevalent in early modern medical and philosophical thought, and provides detailed discussions on its manifestations, origins, symptoms, prognosis, and potential remedies.
Ferrand delves into the fundamental nature of love and its various underlying causes, likely from a humoral or physiological perspective common in the period.
The book details the observable symptoms of "erotic melancholy," which were understood as a form of illness impacting the body and mind.
It provides insights into how to predict the course and outcome of this condition, including different regional variations in love and its associated behaviors.
A significant portion of the treatise focuses on remedies and treatments, encompassing dietary changes, surgical interventions, medicinal treatments, and even "poetical cures" or methods involving music and poetry.
The table of contents reveals detailed explorations of related topics such as jealousy as a symptom, the influence of magic and dreams, and even a comparison of love in men and women.
Published in 1640, this work reflects the medical understanding and cultural attitudes towards love and mental health in early modern England.
