Born in New Jersey, Nicholson moved to Philadelphia in the 1860s to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and to pursue his career as an artist. Nicholson traveled abroad in 1866, visiting France and studying with artist Eugene Isabey, before continuing his travels around Europe and into Egypt. Nicholson was a skilled engraver and a muralist along with being a landscape and marine painter. His seascapes show the influence of Turner, depicting dramatic and atmospheric scenes set along the shore, such as "Sunset along the Coast." Nicholson was a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and exhibited his works at the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Art Association and the Detroit Art Association. His works are in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Deshong Museum in Pennsylvania, and one of his murals, depicting George Washington crossing the Delaware River, is in the Pennsylvania State House.
