Excellent example of hand-coiled blackware pottery bowl signed by Santa Clara Pueblo artist Stella Chavarria. This piece features traditional carved geometric motifs in the round and is finished with the high-gloss black polish characteristic of Santa Clara pottery. The signature is incised on the base: "Stella Chavarria, Santa Clara Pueblo."
Stella Chavarria comes from a well-known family of potters and is part of the extended Tafoya-Chavarria lineage, one of the most respected pottery families in the Santa Clara Pueblo. Her work continues the legacy of traditional Pueblo ceramic techniques, including open firing and hand carving, passed down through generations.
The bowl has a strong symmetrical form and well-defined carving. Good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use. No chips or cracks.
