Description
Iconic Late 19th Century Asian School Travel / Dowry Painted Chest.
Likely Hong Kong for the British Export Market, featuring bright and richly detailed red, black and gold lacquered scenes / panels.
Centerpiece scene is a Royal Emperor / Wise Man at Court, with truly wonderful floral and figural designs in a layered theatre style.
Top and sides are vivid red paint finished, with an equally red paint wash on the rear panel.
Nice heavy iron latch and hinges - plenty strong.
24" tall, 22.5" deep, 33.5" wide.
Structurally very sound, and lined with antique wall papers inside. Shows paint losses on top but otherwise as original with incredible patina.
Chinoiserie at its best!
In keeping with Aesop's fable, Fox and Crow's Motto is "Beware of False Flattery!" So, with each listing we offer a true confession about the item...
