Merry-Go-Round of Fruit: Fornasetti Porcelain Plate "Giostra di Frutta" #6
(c. 1955–1965)
A vibrant and whimsical vintage porcelain plate designed by Piero Fornasetti (1913–1988), from the series titled "Giostra di Frutta" (Merry-Go-Round of Fruit). This is pattern number #6 in the series, produced between 1955 and 1965.
The design features a hypnotic, concentric arrangement of fruits"”likely rose hips, medlars (or persimmons), and geometric seed pods"”encircling the center in four distinct bands. The pattern creates a kinetic, spinning effect reminiscent of a carousel, blending botanical illustration with Fornasetti's love for optical illusion.
The plate itself was manufactured by the German porcelain house Arzberg (as evidenced by the green backstamp), which Fornasetti frequently used as a high-quality "blank" canvas for his transfers during this period.
Markings:
Series Mark: A whimsical black graphic of a carousel/merry-go-round with the text GIOSTRA DI FRUTTA and the number 6.
Fornasetti Mark: The classic "Hand holding a Quill" logo with FORNASETTI - MILANO / MADE IN ITALY.
Maker's Mark: Green printed mark for Arzberg (Germany).
Gilder's Mark: A small gilt "Ac." cipher.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The transfer print remains crisp and colorful. No chips, cracks, or wear to the glaze.
Measurements:
Diameter: 10 1/16 inches (25.6 cm)
Height: 1 inch (2.5 cm)
Historical Context: While Fornasetti is most famous for his "Themes and Variations" (faces), his "Organic" series"”featuring fruits, vegetables, and fish"”showcase his mastery of color and pattern. The "Giostra di Frutta" series is particularly desirable because it transforms mundane natural objects into abstract, geometric art.
