Auguste Edouarte (French, 1789-1861). Three American Identified Pairs of Cut Paper Silhouettes, 1839-1849. Each depicting full-length cut-out figures in black paper, affixed on the reverse with a label printed "This Silhouette of" (with handwritten name of the sitter inserted) "was cut by August [sic] Edouart during his visit to the United States 1839-1849/ Arthur S. Vernay/ 12 East 45th Street, New York," the first depicting a gentleman and a lady holding a flower, inscribed in pencil "James C. Parker/ N. Y.k 12th April 1840 44 Walker St.," and "Mrs. James C. Parker," and on the reverse "James C. Parker/ 44 Walker St. New York 12th April 1840" and "Caroline Kemble Parker/ New York 12th April 1840;" the second depicting a youth holding a hat and flower stem and a child with a stick and string, inscribed "A.O. Parker 16 yr of age/ Brother of James C. Parker" and "James Cortlandt Parker Junior/ Born 14th Oct. 1836" and on the reverse "A.O. Parker 16 yrs old/ New Y.k 18th April 1840" and "James Cortlandt Parker/ B.n 14th Oct. 1836;" and the third depicting a gentleman and a lady holding a lorgnette on a chain, inscribed on the reverse "Mr. George Meade/ Washington 13th Febry 1841" and "Mrs. G. Meade/ F St. West/ Washington 13th Feb.ry 1841," (each sight 9 x 7.125 inches).
