This is a vintage, hand-wrapped roll of forty United States Jefferson Nickels minted in 1942 at the Denver Mint. These coins represent a vital aspect of the US Home Front during World War II (1941-1945). Because nickel was a strategic metal required for the production of military armor plating and other war materials, the US Congress authorized a change in the five-cent piece's composition. From late 1942 through 1945, nickels were struck in an alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese. The 1942-D issue is historically significant as it marks the transition to this silver "War Nickel" composition at the Denver facility, distinguished by the large "D" mint mark placed above the dome of Monticello on the reverse. The roll is housed in a period green paper wrapper with repeating "NICKELS" and "194-" text. A brown adhesive label is affixed to the center with handwritten notations "5" and "42 D," identifying the contents.
