The service was made for Paulus Rombertus Nauta Beuckens (1737-1789) and his wife and cousin Hester Josina Swalue (1746-1812). Nauta Beuckens was a successful and wealthy wine merchant, and ordered this service on the occasion of his marriage in July 1763. By the late 1780s he was one of two directors of a firm trading with the West Indies called Negotiatie op de Deensche Amerikaansche Eilanden (1786-1787).
