Description
This pair of chairs is exquisitely styled, the chinoisery is fine and European in style.
The chairs are raised on "ballet style feet" and seem to want to dance.
The Chinoiserie decorations are Continental in style rather than the classic oriental
motives. During the 17th and 18th century, European painters interpreted chinese penwork
and decorative painting. However they for the most part did not have any examples at hand,
so their fantasy reigned and motives were humorous and fantastic. One see's on the back rail
of the chairs a human female accompanied by child like figures with bear faces, dancing.
This form of decoration is typical for what is known as "European Chinoiserie", found at Brighton
Pallace as well as at Sansoucie.
