Description
Pair of 19th century unusually voluminous and sculptural Japanese sword menuki, one depicting a pile of takaramono (treasure things), the other seashells and seaweed. The subject refers to Takarabune - a mythical ship with treasures piloted through the heavens by the Seven Gods of Good Fortune during the first three days of the New Year. Superb design, use of different alloys including shakudo, various patinas, numerous inlays of silver and gold, in excellent condition. Rather high, must have been made for a special presentation sword. Lengths 1.1 and 1.19 inches.
