Description: In this lot are 12 prints by Fratelli Alinari measuring approx. 7.5” x 10” including: Caterina, Philip 2nd of Spain, Pope Paul 3rd, 3 Ages of Man and more.
In 1852, the Alinari brothers founded the photographic studio Fratelli Alinari dedicated initially to the documentation of Italian art in the museums of that country. These prints produced around 1854 are the results of their work.
Invented in 1850, albumen prints were the most common type of photographic print made during the nineteenth century. The process involves coating the surface of very thin paper with albumen (egg white) and a solution of silver nitrate. This paper was typically so thin it had to be mounted to board or card stock.
