
BRITISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk and wool on linen, four alphabet and numeral rows segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching, below with various motifs featuring birds, flowers in baskets and vases, and lions or dogs, lower edge signed "Sarah Conyer,s Work Aged 8 AD 1834", all encompassed by a linear border. Housed under glass in a wood veneer frame, back with label for Hodges Galleries of Alexandria, VA. Dated 1834. 9 3/4" x 13 1/4" sight, 13 3/4" x 17 1/4" OA.
Catalogue Note: The identity of Sarah Conyers or Conyer is uncertain. There were a few Sarah Conyers who were born between 1825 and 1827 and lived in various towns in Yorkshire, England.
Good to very good visual condition with linen having some toning, a few stains, and some small holes, some thread with fading / fugitive color, dark colored thread causing discoloration on linen, possibly spots of loss to thread, frame with some wear and surface scratches. Not examined out of frame.
