Description
An impressive antique French figural mantel clock featuring a Renaissance-era scholar or artist in period costume, seated beside an ornate round clock case. The bearded figure holds an artist's palette in his hands and is posed next to painter's equipment including what appears to be a helmet and decorative vessel, creating an allegory of Art or Creativity. The clock case is lavishly decorated with rococo-style cast ornamental details and topped with a shell finial. The round dial features Arabic numerals with engine-turned center and visible movement behind a convex glass bezel. The slow/fast regulation markings are visible above the 12. The entire composition sits on a substantial black slate base with elaborate gilt metal scroll feet and decorative mounts. The figural element and clock are cast in gilt metal with rich golden patina throughout. The quality of detail and classical styling suggest late 19th to early 20th century French manufacture.
Condition
Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. The gilt metal shows natural patina with some surface scratches and minor wear. Black slate base has minor surface scratches and edge wear. Clock dial remains clean and legible with clear numerals. Glass bezel is intact. Movement condition unknown - clock has not been tested and we cannot confirm if it runs. Sold as-is and may require professional clock servicing to function properly. Pendulum and key are included.
