Description
An elegant antique French figural mantel clock featuring a classical female figure in flowing Greco-Roman drapery, seated beside an ornate round clock case. The composition depicts a scholarly woman holding an open book, creating an allegory of Learning or Wisdom, a popular theme in French decorative arts. The clock case is elaborately decorated with cast ornamental details, topped with a decorative urn finial with leaf motif. The round dial features Arabic numerals with visible movement behind a convex glass bezel. The entire composition sits on a substantial black slate base with gilt metal scroll feet and decorative mounts. The figural element and clock are cast in gilt metal (possibly spelter, brass, or bronze - difficult to confirm without testing) with rich golden patina. The classical styling and quality of casting suggest late 19th to early 20th century French manufacture.
Condition
Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. The gilt metal shows natural patina and some darkening/tarnish in recessed areas. The female figure shows some surface scratches and minor finish wear, particularly visible on the torso area. Black slate base has minor edge chips and surface scratches. Clock dial remains clean and legible. Glass bezel is intact. Movement condition unknown - clock has not been tested and we cannot confirm if it runs. Sold as-is and may require professional clock servicing to function. Pendulum not visible and may not be included.
