Title: "1930's French Post-Impressionist Oil Still Life Fruit & Portrait of Van Gogh 1930's" Description: French Post-Impressionist, circa 1930's Interior Still Life oil on canvas, unframed Canvas: 14 x 18 inches Stamped canvas Provenance: private collection, UK Condition: very good condition Description: This intriguing mid-20th-century still life oil painting combines the traditional elements of a still life with a nod to art history by featuring a small portrait of Vincent van Gogh in the background. The composition includes a variety of fruits—apples, a pear, and a single plum—arranged on a white cloth, with the subtle but recognizable portrait of Van Gogh adding a unique and thoughtful element to the scene. What is very interesting in this work, is that by the 1930's, when the painting was made, it seems unlikely to imagine that little postcards of Van Gogh's self portrait existed, so where the artist of this work got that inspiration from is unknown. We can successfully date the work from the Winsor & Newton canvas makers stamp on the back, which was used in the 1930's decade. Please note, they were prolific sellers throughout France, as well as the UK. For more any more information please do contact us with any questions you may have. Thank you.
