In the mid 1940s, the "27" code of Erma was replaced by the "ax" code of Feinmechansiche Werke. Only about 150,000 K98 rifles were produced in 1940 with both the "27/ax" code receiver markings, with the "ax" code k98 rifles being much rarer than the "27" | Top of receiver ring is marked "ax / 1940". The right side is marked with three "eagle/280" Waffenamt proofs and the left side is marked with the Nazi firing proof and the serial number. The left rear of the barrel is also marked with the Nazi firing proof and the serial number with three "eagle/280" proofs and "*". The left side receiver wall is marked "Mod. 98" |||| CONDITION: Very good. 90% original blue finish. Crisp and legible markings. Wood stock is excellent and solid with honest battle patina.
