David Halbach attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, and his teachers were the acclaimed Millard Sheets and Rex Brandt. Chouinard introduced Halbach to plein-air painting, which would come to define his artistic vision. Halbach routinely travels from his home in northern California to Western reenactments and Indian reservations in Arizona, which inform his carefully researched compositions. In 1975, Halbach also won the prestigious Silver Medal at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame show for his watercolor "Story Teller", and in 1985 became a member of the Cowboy Artists of America.
