Virginia Cuthbert (American, 1908-2001)
Virginia Cuthbert was an American artist known for her urban genre and modernist-leaning landscapes, as well as her illustration work, particularly for Fortune Magazine. Born in West Newton, Pennsylvania, Cuthbert studied at Syracuse University and later in Europe, where she worked with notable artists like Augustus John. Her early work was influenced by the Ash Can School, but she is best remembered for her magic realist and surrealist paintings, often depicting moody, architectural settings. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, she gained recognition through solo and group exhibitions, and her work was featured in national publications. Cuthbert was a respected educator, teaching at institutions like the University of Buffalo, and she co-founded the Art Department there. She received significant honors, including recognition by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and her legacy was celebrated in a retrospective at the Nina Freudenheim Gallery in 1990.
