VIKING PROTECTIVE ARMOR BROOCH NECKLACE, 10th-11th CENTURY

Description

10th Century. Bronze, just over 1" diameter. Circular, with broad rounded face, flat back, and ridged edge. The surface is textured from burial. Professionally conserved and the pure silver surface restored. On a modern polished leather neck cord with Sterling silver mounts. Worn in numbers on the surface of the jerkin, these small metal brooches provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armor. See current Public Television programming for documentation of these in action. As protectors, they also held spiritual significance for the warrior. Most are plain distinguishing this one for its modeled form. Delicate form and proportions. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
