Christiaan Karel Appel (1921-2006) was a talented Dutch painter, sculptor, and poet. He started painting when he was fourteen and studied at the Rijks Akademie in Amsterdam. He then moved to Paris and became one of the founders of the avant-garde movement Cobra.
