Dorothea Margaret Tanning (1910 2012) was an American painter, printmaker, sculptor, writer, and poet. She was born and raised in Illinois. Surrealism influenced her early work. She was briefly married to the writer Homer Shannon. In her second marriage to German painter Max Ernst, they lived in N.Y. and Sedona, Arizona. Tanning died in 2012 at her Manhattan home at age 101.
