Denise Green (born 1946) is an Australian-American contemporary painter and visual artist based in New York City, widely recognized for her role in the New Image Painting movement of the late 1970s. Her work, often abstract and semi-figurative, emphasizes color, form, and the interplay between intuitive gesture and structured imagery rather than direct representation.Born in Melbourne, Australia, Green grew up in Brisbane and studied art and philosophy in Paris before moving to New York in 1969, where she studied under key modernist figures including Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell at Hunter College. Her exposure to Western modernism, alongside influences from Australian Aboriginal art and her travels in India, has shaped a distinctive artistic language that blends diverse cultural aesthetics.Green?s paintings have been exhibited internationally in over 130 solo shows and multiple retrospectives, and are held in major public collections such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R.
