Title:1884 Johnson Map of Washington Oregon and Idaho -- Johnson's Washington Oregon and IdahoCartographer:Johnson and WardYear/Place:1884, New YorkMap Dimension(in.):12.6 X 15.6 in.Description:This is a rather nice map of the northwest, with an enlarged Idaho Territory incorporating present-day western Montana. Gold discoveries in Idaho in 1860 led to an influx of thousand of miners into the region. Idaho was organized as a territory in July 1863 and Montana was separated as a territory in May 1864, thus this map was issued for only a short period of time. The areas of the Solomon River and the Nez Perce mines are shown as are other mining centers. The eastern portions of Washington and Oregon show few counties, indicative of the low rate of settlements. The Gov. Stevens Pacific Railroad proposed route is shown. Forts and Indian tribes are identified. Plenty of other detail is offered as to topography, rivers,, lakes, railroads, settlements, etc.
