Issued at a formative moment in the development of South Africa’s goldfields, the map illustrates the position and extent of sedimentary formations and the probable continuation of the principal gold-bearing conglomerate beds, making it a document of direct relevance to contemporary mining exploration. Finely coloured to distinguish geological strata, it is overlaid with a detailed cadastral framework showing numbered farms, land divisions, railways and watercourses.
