Description
Christopher Dresser for Coalbrookdale, Cast Iron Aesthetic Movement Hall Stand, English Registration Number 214965, Date of Registration: October 17, 1868
A rare and architecturally striking cast iron coat and umbrella stand designed by Christopher Dresser for Coalbrookdale, one of the most important iron foundries of the Victorian era. This piece, bearing the English design registration number 214965, dates to the late 19th century and exemplifies Dresser's pioneering role in the Aesthetic Movement.
Standing an impressive 74 inches tall, the structure features a highly stylized and symmetrical composition of pierced geometric and botanical motifs, scrollwork, and anthemion patterns. The upper section offers a constellation of finely cast hooks radiating from a central medallion, while the base incorporates elegantly curved umbrella holders with drip trays, each anchored by floral finials shaped like stylized dolphins. The detachable tray is original and intact.
The entire frame is unified by Dresser's distinct blend of industrial precision and ornamental restraint, balancing decorative detail with strong verticality and functional clarity. Cast in rich blackened iron, this piece is both a sculptural object and a utilitarian furnishing, embodying the core tenets of the Aesthetic ethos: "art for art's sake."
Stamped COALBROOKDALE M95 and with full registration marks, it is an authenticated example of British design reform in its most expressive medium.
