Description
Mid-Century Italian Carved Giltwood Sunburst Mirror with Convex Glass
Italy, circa 1950s–1960s
A sculptural and finely executed Italian sunburst mirror, carved in wood and richly water-gilded, centered by a circular convex mirror. The radiating rays are individually carved and staggered in length, creating a dynamic play of light and shadow characteristic of mid-century Italian interpretations of the Baroque and Rococo revival traditions.
The inner ring is crisply carved with a continuous laurel-leaf and berry motif, a classical symbol of victory and eternity, framing the convex glass, which subtly distorts and animates reflected space. The gilding shows clear evidence of traditional water-gilding techniques, with burnished highlights and warmer matte passages that reveal the underlying bole, lending depth and visual richness not achievable through later spray or composite finishes.
Convex mirrors of this type were favored in Italian interiors for their architectural presence and symbolic associations with light, protection, and expanded vision. This example balances decorative opulence with clean mid-century proportions, making it equally suited to classical, Hollywood Regency, or modern eclectic interiors.
