Description
This is an ornate, oval-shaped ceramic basin, likely a decorative planter or fish bowl, designed in the tradition of Satsuma-style pottery. The vessel features a cream-colored crackle glaze that serves as a canvas for a densely populated village scene on the exterior, where figures in traditional robes are depicted amidst thatched-roof huts and rolling mountains under a heavy application of gold-gilded accents. Two thick, C-shaped gold handles are mounted to the sides, framing the "thousand faces" style of the artwork. In a striking contrast to the bustling festival scene outside, the interior of the bowl reveals a serene aquatic world, hand-painted with koi fish, shrimp, and blooming lotus flowers that appear to swim across the bottom. The rim and base are finished with intricate geometric brocade patterns in navy, red, and gold, while the underside bears a red seal mark and a modern cautionary label indicating it is intended for decorative use rather than food service.
While this piece is designed in the traditional Japanese Satsuma style, it is almost certainly a mid-to-late 20th-century decorative export piece, most likely manufactured in China (specifically the Guangdong or Macau regions) or by a Japanese workshop specializing in export reproductions like Royal Satsuma
