Historic swatch of red fabric taken from a flag flown over Fort Sumter during the opening battle of the American Civil War in April 1861. Encapsulated by CAG to an overall size of 2.375" x 3.375", the fabric fragment measures approximately 0.75" x 0.75". This textile originates from a U.S. flag flown during the bombardment of Fort Sumter—the moment that ignited the Civil War. The swatch comes from a larger pair of flag remnants originally preserved by a Civil War veteran, labeled as “Two pieces U.S. Flag taken at the time of the flag incident at Fort Sumter,” and associated with the name William E. Andrews. The original grouping was later sold at Christie’s on April 25, 2022 (Lot 156). Included are copies of provenance documents, including the Christie’s lot label, photographs of the full swatches, and a statement from Walter Historical Documents for reference. A well-documented Civil War artifact from the very site where the conflict began.
