
Description
John Brown’s coat fabric swatch, 75" x .75" which was entangled with the noose used in his 1859 execution in Charles Town, Virginia. The piece was recovered by Captain Richard Adams shortly after the abolitionist’s death and is encapsulated by CAG to an overall size of 2.375" x 3.375". The item is accompanied by period-labeled provenance noting it includes coat and rope fragments from the execution. Brown’s public hanging followed his failed raid on Harper’s Ferry and was witnessed by notable figures including John Wilkes Booth and “Stonewall” Jackson. Includes additional documentation.
