Description
A tall narrow piece of bamboo has been carved with a surface motif of three scholars in a garden with trees overhead. The carving is deep and angular. The bamboo has a dark patina with areas that are spotty and lighter in color, and the bamboo has a soft worn feel. The piece is heavy and the walls of the bamboo are fairly thick. The mouth has a carved rounded edge. The carving looks like a chisel like tool was used because the cuts appear to be chipped off the bamboo.
There is an old paper label from MILL HOUSE Woodbury, Conn. And has a written CIRCA 1860.
MEASUREMENTS
7 3/8 in (18.7 cm) tall x 3 7/8 in (9.8 cm) diameter. Weighs 13.1 oz (370 g)
CONDITION
There are numerous cracks in the bamboo. The largest is on the side and goes from the mouth to almost the foot. The outer surface may have been stained because there are spots darker inside the mouth and there is lighter wear spotting on the outer surface. There is a drop of red paint or lacquer on the back at the very bottom (see photo).
A deeply carved older bamboo brush pot to add to the scholar's desk or home decor. It has a good aged look.
