About the artist: Alexey Alekseevich Shovkunenko - In 1899, he was apprenticed to an icon painting workshop in Kherson. From 1901 to 1908, he continued his studies at the Odessa Art School under K.K. Kostandi, G.A. Ladyzhensky, and D. Krainev.In 1917, he graduated from the Higher Art School at the Academy of Arts in Petrograd (workshop of V. Savinsky, 1909–1917).From 1913, he participated in exhibitions of the Association of South Russian Artists. After graduating from the academy, he returned to Ukraine.From 1917 to 1922, he taught at the Kherson Proletarian Art Studio, and from 1926, at the Odessa Polytechnic of Fine Arts (now the M.B. Grekov Odessa Art School).From 1924 to 1929, he was a member of the K. Kostandi Society.From 1935 to 1965, he was a professor at the Kyiv State Art Institute.His students included A. G. Maksimenko, V. G. Puzyrkov, A. M. Lopukhov, and many other renowned artists, including several dozen Honored and People's Artists of Ukraine.Academician of the USSR Academy of Arts (1947). He was a board member of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR (1938–1968), and served as its chairman from 1949 to 1951.He died on March 12, 1974, in Kyiv. He was buried at Baikove Cemetery.
