BIOGRAPHY
Throughout her life, Ione Citrin has been creative. She was born in Omaha, Nebraska and grew up inspired by an actress mother. After high school in Garfield Park, Illinois, she spent 30 years performing on television, stage, and radio and worked as a model, dancer, and singer doing radio and television commercials in Hollywood and Chicago. Her specialty was "voices" and she did a wide range of character voices on jingles and commercials including the words "I could have had a V8."
She married a man from Chicago and from 1967 to 1975, became hostess of "The Prize Movie with Ione," a two-hour live morning Chicago television show on WLS-TV, CBS in which ran over seven years, and featured morning fitness exercises and call ins. Of this experience, she said: "They were looking for a zany, kooky girl for this format, and I fit the bill." But the show ended with the CBS introduction of Good Morning America.
Her husband died in 1983, and feeling very depressed, she moved to Los Angeles to start over. Because she had been financially successful, she was able to fulfill a wish for extensive travel. She took numerous trips, some of them for six month periods, to India, Nepal, Myanmanr, Srinigar, the Galapagos Islands and most countries in Europe. In those places, she pursued her desire to communicate with human beings all over the world and taped hundreds of conversations, many of them encouraged by her success at pantomining.
Remarried, she is currently focused on her painting and sculpture, preferring the unconventional materials of mixed media collage and assemblage because she likes to be surprised by the end result. Many of these pieces express her extensive world travel.
Reflecting her love of life and openness to new experience, she has titled her art resume "Ione's Art History: A Diary of Visual Extravagance. " Although she leaves the door wide open for spontaneity, she has gotten formal schooling through the two-year certificate program of the Santa Monica Art, Design and Architecture School where she won a full scholarship.
She started painting in oils and sometimes uses acrylics but is flexible, saying: "I'll use whatever it takes to develop a piece. WOW!" She rarely plans ahead, and sometimes her efforts fail such as when she has tried to apply acrylic over oil paint.
For these creative endeavors, she has earned awards from North Light Magazine, Art Calender Magazine, the Pastel Society of the West Coast, Amsterdam Art, The Society for All Artists of London England Manhattan Arts International, Sacramento Fine Arts Center, and Tint Magazine. In June 1999, she was featured in Art Calendar: The Business Magazine for Visual Artists with one of her paintings, The Knitter, on the cover.
