Description
Striking mid-century abstract collage by David Friedman, titled Of Cabbages and Kings, created in 1963. This richly textured composition layers torn and assembled paper elements in a subdued palette of browns, creams, deep greens, and blacks, forming a dynamic grid of organic and geometric shapes. The surface reveals expressive mark-making and painterly passages, giving the work depth and tactile presence.Signed and dated "Friedman '63" at the lower left. The verso retains the artist's handwritten title and signature along with period exhibition labels, including a National Exhibition of Small Paintings tag.Presented in its original oak frame, the piece measures approximately 13 1/2 inches by 13 1/2 inches framed. A strong example of early 1960s American abstract collage, well suited for collectors of mid-century modern art.David Friedmann (1893-1980) was born in Mahrisch Ostrau, Austria-Hungary (now Ostrava, Czech Republic) and became an acclaimed portraitist and graphic artist in Berlin, Germany. Trained under Hermann Struck and Lovis Corinth, he gained recognition in the 1920s for his portraits and lithographs before fleeing Nazi persecution in 1938. Deported to the Lodz Ghetto and later to Auschwitz and other camps, he survived the Holocaust and dedicated much of his postwar work to documenting its atrocities. After living in Czechoslovakia and Israel, he immigrated to the United States in 1954 and continued his artistic career until his death in St. Louis, Missouri.
