Robert Michael Mapplethorpe (1946–1989) was an American photographer celebrated for his refined black-and-white imagery. His oeuvre includes celebrity portraits, male and female nudes, self-portraits, and meticulously arranged still lifes. He is also widely known for his provocative series documenting the gay male BDSM subculture in New York City during the late 1960s and early 1970s, works that challenged conventional notions of beauty, identity, and eroticism.
