(´Jeudi matin´; November 1866), to [Pierre Gavarni], on Fromentin´s blind embossed initialled bifolium stationery, in French. Fromentin commences his poignant letter by stating ´Je n'ai su la triste nouvelle que trop tard. A mon grand regret je n'étais point parmi les amis ou les admirateurs qui ont fait cortège à votre pauvre père. Je vous plains de tout cœur comme mon cher ami´ (Translation: ´I heard the sad news too late. To my great regret, I was not among the friends and admirers who accompanied your poor father on his final journey. I sympathise with you wholeheartedly, as my dear friend´), further asking Gavarni to come and see him, and also remarking ´Je vous offre, à défaut de conseils dont j'ai trop besoin moi-même pour en donner de bien efficaces, surtout à vous, du moins des exhortations. Vous avez un héritage à soutenir, un nom illustre à honorer. Vous le pouvez grâce à des dons très rares´ (Translation: ´I offer you, in the absence of advice, which I myself need too much to give any that is effective, especially to you, at least some words of encouragement.
