
SULLIVAN E. J.: (1869-1933) British book illustrator who worked in a style which merged the British tradition of illustration from the 1860s with aspects of Art Nouveau. A good original pencil drawing executed and signed by Sullivan, one page, 8vo, n.p., September 1909. Sullivan´s preparatory sketch depicts a man standing in a half-length pose with a bare torso, his left hand clenched and raised to his chest, and with his right arm hanging at the side of his abdomen. Sullivan has paid particular attention to the detail in the model´s face, who looks directly towards the viewer in a serious, captivating manner. A further partial study of the right arm appears in the margin. Signed (´EJS´) by Sullivan at the head of the page, further adding Brown´s and the date in his hand beneath his signature.
