Title: Oil painting On the outskirts of the city Alex Kalenyuk Description: No.AAA4718The oil painting on cardboard titled "On the Outskirts of the City" captures a vivid contrast between the bustling presence of an ancient city and the quiet rural life unfolding in its shadow. The artist employs a striking combination of colors, bold brushstrokes, and an expressive impasto technique to bring this dynamic scene to life. The composition is divided into distinct layers, each telling a different part of the story. In the background, towering stone buildings rise against a deep blue sky, their warm beige and ochre hues glowing in the light. These structures, possibly remnants of a historical fortress or an old cityscape, stand as silent witnesses to time, their weathered facades hinting at centuries of history. The rough application of thick paint enhances the rugged texture of the stone, making the city appear both imposing and majestic. Above, the sky is a dramatic blend of purples, blues, and grays, suggesting a time of transition—perhaps the waning daylight of evening or the early hush of dawn. The middle ground is a lush tapestry of greenery, where trees and bushes weave a natural barrier between the urban and rural worlds. The foliage is painted in energetic strokes of bright yellow, emerald green, and deep violet, lending a sense of movement to the scene. The interplay of light and shadow among the leaves gives the impression of a gentle breeze rustling through, further emphasizing the tranquility of this space. In the foreground, small thatched-roof cottages nestle amid a vibrant landscape of purples, blues, and warm earth tones. The rustic homes, with their red and brown roofs, contrast with the grandeur of the city beyond, symbolizing a simpler, slower way of life. A narrow dirt path winds through the settlement, leading the viewer’s eye toward the lone figure engaged in daily work. Clad in a bright orange garment, this figure, possibly a farmer or villager, tends to a small cart, their presence adding a touch of human warmth to the otherwise serene setting. The painting’s palette is particularly striking, with the bold juxtaposition of cool and warm tones creating an almost dreamlike quality. The purple hues in the foreground add depth and a sense of mystery, while the golden city structures glow with an ethereal light. The thick impasto strokes give the painting a tactile, almost sculptural quality, making the colors and forms stand out with remarkable intensity.
