Description
A finely preserved late-Victorian Art Nouveau oil lamp, attributed to Hinks & Son of London (est. 1865), one of England's foremost makers of duplex and patent self-lighting lamps.
Height: 27.5 in (overall)
Date: ca. 1890–1900
Origin: England
Maker: Attributed to Hinks & Son (marked "HS" on burner knob)
Materials: Glazed ceramic, cast brass, glass reservoir, and dual glass shades
The lamp features a molded and glazed ceramic body with bold floral relief in crimson and cream tones, highlighted with green foliage on a raised slip ground. The base and collar are cast brass, with scrolling and foliate ornament typical of high-end late-19th-century production.
The burner is clearly marked "HS", denoting Hinks & Son, and retains the firm's signature duplex burner assembly with functional dual wicks. The piece includes its original clear glass oil reservoir, inner glass chimney, and frosted outer shade, all intact "” a very rare level of completeness, as most examples have lost their glass elements over time. The presence of oil remaining in the reservoir further attests to the lamp's operational status and authenticity.
This is a museum-grade example of a fully functional Art Nouveau oil lamp by one of the period's most important makers. The completeness of its original glasswork and the survival of its duplex burner make it both a decorative and mechanical rarity.
This lamp was likely paired with a matching candle chandelier of similar floral and gilt design, forming a coordinated decorative ensemble for a late-19th-century English parlor interior. Its survival with complete original fittings and operable burner elevates it above typical decorative examples and positions it among the most desirable domestic oil lamps of the period.
The lamp is priced to sell, below the appraised value, reflecting the mechanical completeness and market scarcity of the original burner/chimney components. (The appraisal is available upon request.)
Its value is enhanced by association with a matching chandelier, which collectively represent a cohesive and historically significant interior lighting suite of the late Victorian era.
